Here at Perfect Smile in Adelaide, we understand that good habits start early in life.
Teaching your children about the importance of good oral care will influence their dental health for the rest of their life. We encourage parents to bring their children to visit us as soon as their first birthday or when their first tooth erupts. This allows your child to receive the dental treatment they need and to detect, prevent and remedy any dental concerns before they arise.
Creating a positive experience
During their first visit, your child will be introduced to our Oral Health Therapist, Andrea and staff and welcomed to explore and ask questions at any time. We aim to build trust with both you and your child and hopefully by the end of the visit, they will be looking forward to their next dental visit! We understand that it is very important to create a positive dental experience for your children from an early age, which is why we ensure your child’s visit is and fun and engaging, as well as informative. By creating this type of experience for your child, we aim to eliminate any fears they might have about getting the treatment they require.
Timely detection and prevention for an incredible smile and long term oral health
When it comes to caring for your children’s teeth, we focus on two key areas: dental examinations and early orthodontics. During your child’s check-ups, we take a close look at the emergence of new teeth and their placement. This is so our dentists can find and correct any irregularities before they become a problem later in life as your child’s teeth grow.
While we recommend bringing your child in as early as when their first tooth erupts for a check-up, we generally don’t perform orthodontic evaluation or treatment until the age of seven. The Australian Society of Orthodontists state that at this age, the first adult molars have erupted which means that your child’s back-bite should be established. From here, we can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For instance, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, crowding or gummy smiles. Therefore, timely screening increases the chances for a healthy smile. Even if orthodontic treatment is not required, through vigilant examination such as monitoring the growth and development of the jaw, we can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
The advantages of early orthodontics:
- Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for unerupted teeth
- Reducing the need for tooth removal
- Reducing treatment time with braces
